Doctors don’t have to be prophets or own a crystal ball to predict who is at risk for certain diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease—they usually have a good idea after a physical examination and a look at the patient’s medical and family history. But knowing who might contract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and when has been difficult at best, especially since the process probably starts 10 to 20 years before symptoms become apparent.
